Alcatraz Island

San Francisco's Iconic Prison Island

Alcatraz Island

Project Profile

The main prison building, completed in 1912, was known as one of the most secure prison buildings in the world. The cast in place concrete structure was the largest in the United States. Deteriorating structures from salt water saturation, however, allowed several prisoners to escape and prompted the prison's closure in 1963. JYASF has performed studies for the restoration and upgrades of several structures on the island for the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
